Rebuilding in the Wake of Fire | Pacific Palisades Residence
Driving through the aftermath of the Pacific Palisades fire, one image remained etched in my mind: a landscape of destruction where only concrete walls and brick fireplaces stood—solemn, enduring reminders of homes lost to the flames. This stark contrast between vulnerability and permanence became the conceptual foundation for the design of the new residence.
At the heart of the home is a concrete structural spine—a symbolic and functional element that organizes the plan and ensures the structural integrity of the house in the event of a fire. Radiating from this spine, a series of strategically placed concrete walls serve as barriers against the prevailing Santa Ana winds that once helped fuel the blaze. Naturally, all exterior materials will be selected for their fire resilience, and the landscaping will be designed accordingly to reduce fire risk and enhance defensibility.
